Silhouette The Show
Date - Thursday, November 28th, 2013
Location - At sea, on the way to Catania
This was the final sea day of our cruise and tonight, the Celebrity Production Singers and Dancers would be putting up Silhouette The Show! Quoting from Celebrity Today,
"Silhouette - The Show is a theatrical and imaginative journey, showcasing world class speciality acts amidst light, shadows and special effects."
Yesterday, the Cruise Director told us that this show was specially created for the Silhouette and we could only find it on the Silhouette. Sounds like this was not to be missed!
The electronic billboard, outside the Silhouette Theatre.
We were not allowed to take video, audio, and flash photography. I figured we could take still shots without flash and so I did. Here are some snapshots from the show.
The speciality acts were very good. At first, I thought they were be the normal juggling and other such circus-like acts. However, these performers brought acts like juggling and balancing to a whole new level.
There were many aerial acts as well.
Two guys. Don't drop off!
That was a production singer being hoisted up high.
The show lasted a good 45 minutes and it was fast-paced. There was always a major act going on. Not much by way of singing. It was really all about theatrics.
Overall, it was a wonderful performance. I certainly have not watched anything like this and I hope I can get to watch it again in the future.
Highly recommended, if you are on the Celebrity Silhouette!

Celebrity Silhouette Elite Social Cocktail Hour and Elite Morning Coffee
Celebrity Silhouette
Although this was our first cruise on Celebrity, we enjoyed reciprocal benefits as Crown & Anchor Diamond members and were recognized as Elite members on board. The word 'Elite' was printed on our sea-pass cards.
Our children were also C&A Diamond members in their own right, however as they were under 18, there was no recognition. I asked the Captain's Club hostess on board what the policy was and she explained to me that Celebrity's loyalty programme did not apply to children under 18. So be it.
These vouchers were waiting for us in the cabin. We found the laundry vouchers (Complimentary Wash, Dry, Fold up to 30 items) most useful.
So was this letter. Eventually, it turned out that we did not attend the wine-tasting. Neither did we attend the Elite tea. I planned to go for the wine tasting which was held on a sea day, however, it clashed with the Family Scavenger (organized by Fun Factory) hunt held at the same time. It was more important to spend time with the kids!
The Elite Elegant Tea was held on a port day. By the time we got back that day, I recall it was too late. I did ask the Captain's Club hostess why the Elegant Tea was held on a port day. The answer I got was that there were too few sea days this cruise and she had difficulties slotting in all the events. Oh well, there is always the next time.
This was Day 2 I recall. We came back from dinner and found this lovely rose in our cabin. Nice touch. My wife loved it!
Evening Social Hour
The evening social hour (5pm to 7pm every evening) was held in the Sky Lounge. Vouchers were not used for this cruise. We attended the social event almost every day from 5pm to about 5:40pm, then we left for dinner (early seating). The Lounge was 80% to 90% full.
Celebrity does not have a dedicated Concierge Lounge. Neither does she had a Diamond Lounge. So I believe Suite guests were also invited to the evening social hour. We talked to a couple who were sailing with Celebrity for the first time and weren't C&A Diamond. They were staying in a suite and their attendant (or butler?) reminded them to attend the evening social hour.
Here was the menu of available drinks. Service was prompt.
There were also canapes. This evening, I was seated at the bar counter.
This evening, we were not at the bar counter. At one of the other seats.
This was the evening cocktail hour, on another evening. This time I brought Darth Vader along.
I had these canapes.
Morning Coffee Break
Held daily from 8am to 10am at the Tuscan Grille. I noticed that the Captain's Club hostess was there every morning. This was the drink's menu. (A little bit torn at the edges!)
They set up a small buffet with light breakfast items, including freshly sliced fruits, bread, smoked salmon etc.
There was yogurt and juices.
The view of the breakfast table from the other side. The selection was the same every day.
For some reason, I did not try these juices, so I am not sure if they were freshly squeezed or not.
I would order a Mimosa and a Cafe Latte. We had enough food so we did not usually get anything to eat.
On this particular day, I decided to get something to eat. My wife loved the smoothie.
On this particular morning, both Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader came along. Hey guys, how's the cruise going?
My mimosa and coffee on another morning.
Tasted good.
This was one of the events, I think the Captain's Club Celebration. They got two of the four production singers to do some numbers. They were pretty alright. The event was well attended.
The end and thank you for reading.
Under the reciprocal arrangements, Celebrity Cruises Elite Members would be recognized as Crown and Anchor Diamonds when sailing on Royal Caribbean. In recent times, RCI have introduced dedicated Diamond Lounges onboard their ships. We enjoyed this perk tremendously on the Legend of the Seas.

Safe travels!

Naples - Pompeii Part 3
The final stop on our day in Naples - Pompeii! We got here after Sorrento and we had about 2 hours to roam. It turns out that 2 hours is insufficient to cover Pompeii. I think you need at least 4 hours, if not 6 hours, if you want to go through most of the major archaeological finds.
The good thing about visiting in end November is that there were no crowds. We were fortunate that this was a cloudy day. It looked like it was going to rain, but the skies held up. That was a relief since the site of Pompeii is out in the open.
In summer, I hear that this place is flooded with tourists (and pickpockets!). It is also very sunny and hot. So, if you are planning a visit in summer, do bring enough water and a good hat, and watch those valuables!
This was the ticketing booth.
Views from the ticketing area.
They had a book shop.
We start our journey. This slope upwards was rather steep.
And we emerge, into ruins, literally.
Pompeii is a fascinating place. So much has been written about it, therefore I shall not attempt to say much in this post. Enjoy the pictures.
Imagine the busy streets, AD 79.
This looked to be an impressive hall or landmark. The bottom of the columns still exist.
Tourists, but nothing like the crowds in summer. Look at the overcast skies.
There she is, Mount Vesuvius, AD79.
You must remember that over the past few centuries, much work has been done to restore Pompeii and to ensure its continued survival. Those red tiles you see, obviously they were not from AD 79.
Many modern structures can be seen, like the roofs here. They must have been built to protect the underlying ancient structures.
The kids having a great time running around. Boundless energy.
More restoration work was on-going. This path was closed. Looks like there were trying to keep the walls from collapsing!
Look at the colour on the walls inside a house. Fascinating.
Decorative art.
This was very fascinating. Mosiac flooring.
Lots of renovation and restoration work going on, as I had mentioned earlier,
Skip, hop... at least the kids were entertaining themselves!
This courtyard was closed.
And we came to this breathtaking structure - the Amphitheatre of Pompeii, built around 80BC. This is the world's oldest surviving Roman Amphitheatre and the first to be built out of stone. Previous amphitheatres were built out of wood. The Colosseum in Rome was build more than a century later.
And we go into the Amphitheatre, like gladiators going to war.
It started to rain and out came the umbrellas.
Imagine the crowds cheering!
As the Gladiators fought the battle of their lives.
Either you die, or I die.
I read that this Amphitheatre could take 20,000 people.
We started to head back to where we came from and took more photos along the way.
Some archaeologists estimate that there were 200 cafes and bars in Pompeii. Counters were set up, selling food from large jars. Perhaps this was one such cafe.
You can still see the faint painting on the wall.
Protected by a layer of hard plastic or glass. Otherwise, it would be gone under the harsh weather.
Somebody's courtyard? Or some public building.
You can see the work being done to preserve these very old buildings, more than 2,000 years old!
One can only imagine what this place looked like, before AD79.
Yet another person. Crouching for dear life. They stood no chance.
Lying down, hands protecting the face. Buried in the ash, only to become an exhibit 2,000 years later. Think about it. It is quite profound.
We found a Cafeteria. I assume this didn't exist in AD79.
Hump-backed Mt Vesuvius.
A lot of imagination is required, to imagine what this place was like 2,000 years ago. However, it is clear that the place must have been very grand.
Scientists agree that Mount Vesuvius was much taller before the massive eruption in AD79. Some accounts I have read estimate the Mountain to have reached in excess of 8,000 feet. Today, she is about 4,200 feet.
Pompeii, short video taken with my iPhone.
After a fascinating visit, we made it back to the ship in good time. The port was very nice. There were shops opened, even though we were the only ship in port today.

Here we are, back on the ship! And this wraps up our visit to Naples.
