Sailing through Straits of Messina on the way to Naples - Celebrity Silhouette

Celebrity Silhouette
Sailing through the Straits of Messina on the way to Naples.

The night before, we were going to cross the channel that separates Sicily island the the main Italian peninsula, called the Strait of Messina.   There have been many plans to build a Straits of Messina bridge, however, as at writing the project has been cancelled due to the lack of funds.

Looking at the map, there didn't seem to be a body of water that separated Sicily and the Italian mainland.

Very interesting views as we passed through the Straits.  The ship was heading north and my balcony was on the starboard side.  So I am facing mainland Italy.

I noticed a boat nearby, keeping up with us.

You could see the road and street lamps on the mainland.

This shot was taken towards the aft.  Right side of the picture is Sicily, left side of the picture is Italy mainland.

The picture turned out like some watercolour painting,

The lifeboats.

That's the pilot craft.

Mystical picture, don't you think?

Lighting effects are gorgeous.

The pilot craft was coming closer.

And closer.

Almost by the ship already.  I figured she needs to pick up the pilot.

Coming in really close.  She will go under the lifeboats shortly.

Do continue to read my blog posts of our visit to Naples.
